In our inaugural video of the “Ask the Coach” vlog series, we discussed “8 Helpful Considerations to Reinvent yourself.” As we’ve been discussing, Spring is a great time to reinvent yourself via new projects, behavior changes, etc. As we close out the theme and change our focus, we wanted to leave you with reminders on what to think about when taking on a personal change or achieving goals. It’s important to note that we see this topic as more of a conversation. Whether you’re a coach or being coached, you’re partnering with someone. The same point is true even if you are working alone. Instead, you are having a dialogue with “self.” So again, this a very partnership-oriented conversation and definitely takes grace, intention, and focus.

  • Identify the “why” – It’s critical to have a vision before changing something, no matter the severity or significance. This point is all about developing a “North Star” for you to follow as you embark on your reinvention journey(s)
  • Examine what’s changing – It is absolutely necessary to know which aspects or parts of your life you would like to refine or fine-tune. Dial in on what is actually requiring change, so that you can align “the what” with “the why” and continuously internalize the purpose of the reinvention or change
  • Explore what success looks like – Visualization is key to realizing a goal or vision. In fact, we believe it is one of the most powerful tools in achieving success. This requires seeing yourself in the future and attempting to see, smell, hear, and feel how success will manifest. After being able to visualize success, we find that our clients have been able to 1) qualify the goal or change more easily and 2) corroborate or strengthen the case to keep doing the work required to make the change
  • Establish the goals – Being able to see all (or most of) the steps ahead is necessary to achieving your goals or change. More times than not, goals will have several related “sub-tasks” embedded beneath them and require a level of planning much like project management. While you may not capture every step, the more diligent you are in thinking through the game plan, the more success you’re likely to achieve
  • Set the performance measures – Being able to measure and track the performance of your efforts is significant for several reasons. Principally, we see performance as a key indicator of success and critical to accountability in achieving your vision. Thus, it’s important to setup enough rigor to answer questions about performance later
  • Become the reinvention – Once you’ve set up the plan and measured your success, it’s always good to remind yourself of the vision, target behaviors, and measures/metrics you created earlier on. Keep in mind that this tactic is ongoing and should be handled iteratively
  • Focus on improving – Thing back on how you did. Were you able to achieve success? If so, to what extent? Constant improvement will help you refine your process and make that repeatable. Reinvention is something that can be done across several aspects of life and isn’t typically a “one and done” or one-time thing. For that reason, we repeat the emphasis on iteration as in the previous point.
  • Celebrate your success – For whatever reason, we find that clients tend to “gloss over” or barely acknowledge the hard work they’ve accomplished after achieving success. We believe success is worth celebrating in a big way when you’ve achieved a goal or experienced success, regardless of the perceived gravity or “worth” of it. Please do not undersell or diminish your work. Your time is worth valuing, and you likely spent a considerable amount of time working towards your goal or reinvention – cherish that work you put in and own the success

As we mentioned in the vlog, these tips are not meant to be taken for granted and may not always apply as outlined. We encourage you all to be brave and develop your own processes; the above are just guiding principles to consider. After a few times of trying to reinvent (or improve) some aspect(s) of your life, the process will become more and more seamless.
